He has been serving as a distinguished professor in the Center for Global Discovery at Sophia University since 2015.Dirk HebeckerAfter working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Germany, Dirk Hebecker joined UNHCR in 1993 as an associate repa-triation ofcer in Hanoi, Vietnam. With 20 years of humanitar-ian affairs experience under his belt, he has been serving as UNHCR’s Representative in Japan since 2016.UNHCR’s Approaches toAddressing Global NeedsIn 2014, Sophia University entered into a comprehensive agreement on education with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to promote the organizations’ causes and increase students’ awareness of global humanitarian agendas and international organizations as future career options. This year, Sophia University joins the “Refugee Higher Education Programme” Agreement with UN-HCR. The aim of this programme is to provide access to higher education through scholarships from So-phia University for refugees in Japan who would otherwise have difficulties in completing a four-year undergraduate degree programme. Based on this agreement, Sophia University will begin accepting stu-dents from 2017.
