Toshiaki Koso, Chancellor of Sophia School Corporation, visited two Ca-ribbean island countries at the end of February 2016 to strengthen Sophia University’s network. His rst purpose was to discuss the specics of a comprehensive memoran-dum of understanding (MOU) on educa-tional collaboration with the University of the West Indies (UWI). Sophia Univer-sity had been making preparations for the signing of an academic exchange agreement with the UWI as part of the Caribbean-Japan Friendship and Co-operation Project conducted by the As-sociation for Promotion of International Cooperation (APIC). On September 30, 2015, Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor Campus Newsof the UWI, and Takashi Hayashita, President of Sophia University, signed an MOU on academic exchange in the presence of Shinzo Abe, the Prime Min-ister of Japan, also visiting Jamaica at that time, and Simpson Miller, the Prime Minister of Jamaica. Koso visited the UWI Mona Campus in Kingston and the St. Augustine Campus in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, in order to dis-cuss future exchange and prospects. Hilary Beckles and Koso agreed to continue discussions on the possibil-ity of student and faculty member ex-change between the universities as well as collaboration, and human resources exchange in Japanese language edu-cation delivered at UWI. Moreover, as both universities have fac-ulties and schools for the study of the environment, including climate change and disaster preparedness, they also agreed to work on research exchange in those elds. Both Archibald Mc-Donald, Principal of the UWI Mona Campus, and Clement Sankat, Principal of the UWI St. Augustine Campus, said that they were looking forward to the realization of various cooperation systems in the elds of the environment, environmental law and scientic technology. Koso paid courtesy visits to govern-ment ofcials in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago as well as the Japanese embassies in the two countries to ask for support at the time of the implemen-tation of specic plans laid out in the educational collaboration agreement. The other purpose of the trip was the establishment of a new Catholic network. Koso visited St. George’s Col-lege in Kingston and spent time with students there. Looking back on the student guided tour, he said that it was impressive that the campus ministry and Jesuit residence were built on the campus. In Trinidad and Tobago he paid a courtesy visit to the Archbish-op’s Palace and held discussions with Bishop Lanos and others engaged in Catholic education. “It was a fruitful trip that cemented the establishment of a network that will bring broader, deeper, and richer learn-ing,” Koso said. “Taking advantage of the encounters during this past trip, I would like to help nurture the ties in their various forms in the same spirit as is embodied in the phrase, Sophia: Bringing the World Together.”Left: A visit to St. George’s CollegeRight: Campus tour with St. George’s studentsToshiaki Koso, Chancellor of Sophia School Corporation, Visits Caribbean Island Countries to Build Deeper Relations#01Visit to Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Education They expressed their full support of the UWI and So-phia University MOU.Hilary Beckles, Vice Chancellor of the UWI and Toshiaki Koso, Chancellor of Sophia University discuss future educational collaboration and exchanges.3
