Ayana Kondo➣ DEPARTMENT: Department of English Studies, Faculty of Foreign Studies➣ YEAR: Senior➣ DESTINATION: Pontical Catholic University of Peru➣ LOCATION: Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu, Peru➣ PERIOD: From February 27th to March 14th, 2016 he impetus for my participation in the Peru Study Tour was my experiences with Japanese Peruvian returnee children in my language-related volunteer activities. As I specialize in language education, I did a pre-survey on education for peo-ple of Japanese descent (Nikkeijin), specically Japanese Peruvians. I learned, among many other things, that the rst immigrants to arrive in Peru built a school and provided Japanese language educa-tion to their children to prepare them for a return to Japan. But after World War II, many decided to stay there permanently and instruction in Japanese has continued up to the present day, over 100 years since the emigration from Japan began. This focus by the Japanese community on education is one of the reasons why the Japanese in Peru have gained acceptance. Through my experiences in volunteer activities and this tour, I have been motivated to learn more about bilingual education. As globaliza-tion proceeds, I would presume there will be more bilingual children even here in Japan and, without appropriate education, there may be cases where the different language environments in and outside the home cause confusion. To help prevent that and other problems that bi-cultural children can encounter, I would like to be involved in teaching.TBuilt on the original education and research partnerships formed by Sophia University and Nanzan University and Sophia University Junior College Division, a new overseas study program, Sophia Nanzan Latin America Program, was established in cooperation with 13 universities in six countries: Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Columbia and Argentina. In addition to learning languages and local cultures at those universities, students are able to participate in a wide variety of programs such as intern-ships, study tours and service-learning in Japanese communities in local areas. BACKGROUNDfrom “GERMANY” to“SOPHIA”from “SOPHIA” to“PERU”Jennifer Diethany people come to Japan for sushi and manga, but for me Japan is much more. The initial reason I started to learn Japanese was its beautiful sound, but my interest in linguistics and lit-erature also motivated me; I want to read Murakami Haruki and Soseki Natsume in Japanese some day. At Sophia, I am taking an intensive Japanese course and there is a lot of homework every day. The Japanese teaching style is different from what I ex-perienced in Germany. In Japanese universities, an emphasis is put on learning the patterns and repeat-ing them. In Germany, classroom discussions play a more important role. It is very interesting to compare the teaching styles. I would like to extract and com-bine the best elements from both because some day I would like to become a teacher, which has been my dream since my very rst day of school. That is why I would like to apply my experience at Sophia University and use my knowledge about how it feels to study foreign languages and cultures if I teach German or English in Asia. My dream is to travel the world as a teacher, maybe even build a school in a developing country and organize classes for dis-advantaged children. It is important to give these children the opportunity to study because I believe education creates more choices in life.M➣ UNIVERSITY: University of Erfurt➣ DEPARTMENT: Faculty of Education➣ YEAR: Graduate (First Year)➣ MAJOR: Education ➣ PERIOD OF STAY AT SOPHIA: From September 2015 to July 2016 Sophia University, in 2013, signed a student exchange agreement with the University of Erfurt, a public university located in Erfurt, Germany.
