Vol.3SUMMER2016The Faculty of Economics, which started as the Department of Commerce when So-phia University was founded, is one of the original faculties in the headstream of So-phia, which celebrated its 100th anniver-sary in 2013.As the Japanese economy becomes a full-blown, advanced knowledge-based economy, the Faculty of Economics is striving to cultivate human resources with a global perspective who are able to envi-sion and act to realize a better society. To contribute to solving current issues with the latest information and innovative solu-tions, we conduct advanced research and encourage active learning that enhances student engagement through a variety of specialized programs in collaboration with external institutions. To that end, most recently in 2016, “Faculty of Economics, Economics in English Program” was estab-lished.In the midst of continued globalization, traditions must be updated with an eye to bringing a fresh breeze into the world as they are passed to the next generation. Imaizumi Imaemon XIV, a master crafts-man of Arita ware and living national trea-sure of Japan with an over-370-year family history of using the same techniques to produce ceramics, once said: “A tradition is not just passed on; it should be crafted to suit modern life.”Thus, it is our duty to remain ambitious and carry the torch of Sophia’s 100-year-old traditions. Our “challenging spirit,” the a continuous pursuit of leading-edge edu-cation and innovative research, shall be the guardians of Sophia’s proud history, and I sincerely hope that it leads many young students to open the door and enter the Faculty of Economics.KOZOYAMADADean, Faculty ofEconomicssophia – bringing the world togethercontentsHints for SustainabilityFound in the JapaneseCountrysideANNE McDONALD / Professor, Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, Sophia UniversityApproach6Special talk16New Horizons for Religious Studies & EducationSHOTEN MINEGISHI / Abbot of Choraku-ji, Soto Zen Buddhist TempleSUSUMU SHIMAZONO / Dean of the Graduate School of Applied Religious Studies, Sophia UniversitySANJI YAMAOKA / Assistant Provincial, Japan Province, Society of JesusDevelopment of a New Treatment Method for a Brain Disease in MusiciansSHINICHI FURUYA / Associate Professor, Department of Information and Communication Science, Faculty of Science and Technology, Sophia UniversityIn Studying French Modernity, We See the Challenges forPresent-Day JapanAKIRA MIZUBAYASHI / Professor, Department of French Studies, Faculty of Foreign Studies, Sophia UniversityResearch10Campus News3Network30Cooperation26Providing a Global Perspective viaIndustry-University CooperationYOSHIHIRO MURAKAMI / President of UD Trucks Corporation, Volvo GroupMIKI SUGIMURA / Vice President for Academic Exchange, Sophia UniversityA Desire to Create a World in whichPeople’s Choices and Possibilities are not Limited by Their EnvironmentYUKA KAWAMURA / Faculty of Foreign Studies, Sophia UniversityStudent20Hop!
