【学習内容】
In this WESTERN-STYLE classroom, you will be required to participate FULLY; speak 348% more than you have before; sit at the FRONT; smile; use lots of eye contact; sit beside two other ‘genki’ people; speak a lot with partners in a friendly manner; show ‘Western’ manners (e.g. cover your mouth when coughing/sneezing/yawning/etc.); use INTERNATIONAL Body Language; develop a sense of humor; use pens (not pencils); keep a large namecard on your desk and learn to think in INTERNATIONAL, cross-cultural ways. You’re welcome to this class IF you’re truly MOTIVATED to learn REAL English (not high school “Wasei Eigo”).
Please always show a LARGE namecard on your desk, so that the teacher can learn your name; and please bring your POSITIVE energy and humor to this class! ‘Go for it!’ (Gambatte!)
【学習方法】
Cross-cultural, INTERNATIONAL topics will be discussed and practiced, via newspaper articles; cultural festivals and happenings; song-listening exercises; international VIDEOS; ‘conversation’ situations; and other timely topics.
【学習形態】
Students in a Western-style class should PARTICIPATE 436%, and share their opinions--even if the grammar isn’t yet perfect. In addition, students should become more OUTGOING (‘Gai-ko-teki’), and show a sense of HUMOR, if they hope to have FUN, interesting conversations with INTERNATIONAL people. Please forget ‘Wasei Eigo’; and ‘challenge’ real, modern English. Go for it!
【受講者に期待する達成レベル】
If students bring positive motivation and open minds, they can learn to more smoothly speak in (and reply in) FAST, natural English. Student improvement depends a LOT on how motivated, participatory, and open-minded each student can become.

【学習内容】
This is an upper-intermediate conversation course for students who also want to continue working on their listening, reading, and writing skills. As a class, the wide range of topics we will speak about and discuss vary from K.I.P.P.E.R.S (Kids In Parents’ Pockets Eroding Retirement Savings), through a look at extreme experiences, down to learning how to interpret dreams. There will also be time for students to choose their own discussion topics. Listening exercises mean, for example, listening to humorous rhymes by Hilaire Belloca, such as a story called The Story of Jim and the Lion, a humorous verse with a moral. We will read about how the American West was won and also read about the hugely popular American TV series Friends. Finally, although writing is not a main goal of this course, there will be opportunities available. For instance, students may wish to write about a favorite city or town, or write about a famous person.
【学習方法】
The emphasis in this course is to provide students with plenty of time to talk in pairs and groups, and for us to discuss as a class. English will be our class language.
【学習形態】
The first part of each lesson will focus on grammar points, readings, or listening exercises. The second part of each class will be given over to speaking and discussion activities.
【Course goals】
I hope students will complete this course and feel that they have consolidated and further developed their English skills, and that, in particular, they will feel more confident about discussing and testing their ideas and opinions in nuanced English.

【学習内容】
In this class we will use several methods to study English through the medium of the cinema. Our movie this semester will be Fahrenheit 451, an adaptation of the science fiction book of the same name by Ray Bradbury. Much of our time in class will devoted to discussion based on a scene-by-scene viewing of this artistic movie starring Oskar Werner and Julie Christie. To help us understand the movie fully we will read and discuss the novel closely. By paying attention to how the story was presented on screen and on the printed page, including the cinematic and literary techniques used, we will learn to “read a movie.” This skill, along with a sharpened reading ability, will help you with your future language studies. For more information about the class please check my website; if you have any questions, please let me know by email. <http://www2.gol.com/users/kcleary> <kcleary(at)gol.com>
【学習方法】
We will read the novel to prepare for class. The first part of class may be given over to discussing the novel, in language or literary style. The novel is not very difficult to read, but has a fair number of words that may be unfamiliar to you, so it will help you expand your vocabulary.
During class we watch the movie scene-by-scene. We pay attention to the language and meaning of the presented scenes, and will often discuss topics related to the movie and topics related to our own experiences.
【学習形態】
There are three modes of learning in the class:
Classwide discussion: Discussion of the novel, Q&A about the movie; Small group discussion: Discussion of the movie scenes, character actions, narrative; Self-study: Reading for preparation for class discussion/movie watching and for pleasure.
【受講者に期待する達成レベル】
There are many goals to this class, including:
  • Be able to read a source text closely
  • Learn to "read" a movie
  • Be able to express complex opinions
  • Be able to understand a narrative story
  • Understand Western body language and communication strategies
  • Enjoy using English

This is an international-style (‘Western-style’) class: students will learn by participating FULLY; by trying NEW STYLES of learning; and by bringing and showing MOTIVATION. Pronunciation ‘drills’ will be done/practised; song-listening exercises will help to improve pronunciation, listening, and vocabulary; and pair-practice will assist MOTIVATED, outgoing (‘Gai-ko-teki’) students to explore conversation topics. Some INTERNATIONAL VIDEOS and SONGS may also be included.
【学習形態】
Pronunciation drills will provide each student a chance to listen to and imitate North American English pronunciation.
