【学習内容】

This is an upper-intermediate conversation course for students who also want to continue working on their listening, reading, and writing skills. As a class, the wide range of topics we will speak about and discuss vary from how tourism may actually narrow the mind, through the possible endings to a classic English novel, to the pros and cons of living abroad. There will also be time for students to choose their own discussion topics. Listening exercises mean, for example, listening to a song called Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh about an American boy who has gone away to summer camp with strange results. We will read an extract from a famous English novel (The Mayor of Casterbridge) and also read about English families who saw emigration as ‘The Great Escape’. Finally, although writing is not a main goal of this course, there will be opportunities available. For instance, students may wish to write a film or book review.

Each week a different musical genre is introduced and learners learn the history and style of the genre. Using a specific discussion strategy, they then discuss their opinions of the genre in pairs or small groups. Each week also highlights three example songs for the genre. Using a specific listening strategy, learners listen to the songs,which are also included on a CD that comes with the textbook. Learners then discuss their opinions and thoughts about the songs in pairs or small groups. By presenting the genre and songs in an enjoyable and interesting format, at the end of the course learners should have a well-rounded understanding of contemporary Western music as well as the ability to discuss it at an upper-intermediate level.

【学習内容】

In this class we will use several methods to study English through the medium of the cinema. Our movie this semester will be A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and the book is the novel of the same name by Betty Smith. Much of our time in class will devoted to discussion based on a scene-by-scene viewing of this classic movie. To help us understand the movie fully we will read and discuss the novel closely. By paying attention to how the story was presented on screen and on the printed page, including the cinematic and literary techniques used, we will learn to “read a movie.” This skill, along with a sharpened reading ability, will help you with your future language studies. We read the novel to prepare for class. The first part of class may be given over to discussing the novel, in language or literary style. The novel has many characters and stories. After you get used to the story you will find it hard to stop reading, and the length of the book will help you expand your vocabulary.
During class we watch the movie scene-by-scene. We pay attention to the language and meaning of the presented scenes, and will often discuss topics related to the movie and topics related to our own experiences.

Pronunciation ‘drills’ will be done/practised; song-listening exercises will help to improve pronunciation, listening, and vocabulary; and pair-practice will assist MOTIVATED, outgoing (‘Gai-ko-teki’) students to explore conversation topics.
