Faculty of Science and Technology

The faculty aims to cultivate in our students expertise as well as sensitivity, intelligence and an ability to think freely beyond their areas of study. The academic goal of the faculty is to produce human resources with a “multiple intelligence” which enables them to contribute to solving complicated problems in the modern society. The curriculum offers a wide variety of courses to learn fundamentals of science and engineering, and to obtain an ability to keep up with the speed of technical innovation and diversification in industry. The courses are also designed to acquire a “multiple intelligence” to support humanity and the environment. In order to make a full use of “multiple intelligence”, it is necessary to acquire fundamental knowledge of the entire domain of science and engineering as the base of an individual’s area of expertise and interdisciplinary skills. Each department has its key themes that indicate the areas of study for students to choose from. Students are required to study courses in accordance with the specialized field of their choice which is represented by a key theme. The faculty maintains the university tradition of small classes that enable students to receive advice from teachers on the selection of courses and area of study. The faculty also provides training in English for science and technology to equip students with competence necessary in the globalized world.

Department of Materials and Life Sciences

The department focuses on study of “materials and life” (= Science) in nature. It aims to cultivate in our students fundamental knowledge of substances ranging from atoms to polymers and vital phenomena through a comprehensive and interdisciplinary course that covers traditional physics, chemistry, biology, environmental studies and materials science. The academic goal of the department is to develop human resources who contribute to humanity and society through technological development and creation of new materials. That is, it is to develop human resources with new visions of materials and life that fit well with nature; in other words, those who play major roles in the “longstanding harmonization of nature and technology.” In order to achieve this goal, the curriculum offers fundamental courses on science and engineering including mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and information in the first two years. Based on this foundation, more specialized courses are provided in the last two years in accordance with key themes such as “materials and nanotechnology”, “harmony of environment and life”, and “creation of high performance materials”.” Through specialized education, our graduates are expected to have “multiple intelligence” and contribute in a wide variety of fields. The department also provides training in English for science and technology to produce scientists and technicians with international competence.

Department of Engineering and Applied Sciences

The mission of the department is support for humanity and environment. The department conducts research to discover new physical phenomenon, to analyze the possibility of its application and to create new functions. The department offers a comprehensive curriculum to learn scientific courses including modern physics developed from the basic theory of physics and mathematics and applied mathematics, as well as engineering courses such as material science, devices, electronics, energy and mechanics. The department aims to develop human resources with creativity that foster harmonized development of industrial technology and natural science. In order to achieve this goal, the department offers fundamental education of natural science in the first two years, and on the basis of this foundation, more specialized education is provided to achieve “multiple intelligence”. These courses include mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering and physics in accordance with the key themes such as “creation of energy and its usage”, “understanding of materials and creation of materials and devices” , and “manufacturing and establishment of systems”. The department also provides training in English for science and technology to produce scientists and technicians with international competence.

Department of Information and Communication Sciences

The department offers a curriculum to obtain knowledge on “information for analysis and integration” for systematic arrangement and utilization of “wisdom”. The academic purpose of the department is to develop human resources with creativity and understanding of humanity and society through “information”. Thus the department focuses on the fundamental education in natural science and takes an interdisciplinary approach from humanities and social science. The department aims to equip students with an ability to visualize, organize and accumulate knowledge, wisdom and experience as information and provide them back to society in an appropriate manner. The department offers fundamental courses on science and engineering including mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and information in the first two years and in the third and fourth years, more specialized education in accordance with the key themes including “human information”, “communication information”, “social information” and “mathematical information”. The curriculum is interdisciplinary and based on the concept of “multiple intelligence”. The department also provides training in English for science and technology to produce scientists and technicians with international competence.
