UN Women Regional Director Asia Pacific Miwa Kato

On May 18 UN Women Regional Director Asia Pacific Miwa Kato was invited for the symposium “Let’s Talk about Our World with UN Women Regional Director Asia Pacific Miwa Kato” moderated by Distinguished Professor Ichiro Fujisaki. After making remarkable achievements at UNODC she was lead to the present position.
She suggested to the students who are interested in the career at UN “Before setting your goal on just working for UN, it is important to discover your ideals; what you want to achieve with your life." “Also please make challenges and do what you can only do while you are students.” She also advised to find opportunities for firsthand experiences such as overseas trainings or internships related to UN.

Giving advices to students

She explained as for minimum requirement to work for UN, students must earn Master Degrees and to be fluent in English. The special skills in the areas such as in technology or in accounting are always plus and as for getting Doctorate Degree it is highly recommended but having some years of working experiences maybe useful she added.

Former Permanent Representative to UN

Based upon her past experiences, she suggested to apply “and” instead of “or” once coming to making lifetime decisions. She claimed "for instance you do not have to give up your private life for your job even with big responsibilities." She also told the importance of finding good mentors and friends for support. Former Permanent Representative to UN and also her former boss Motohide Yoshikawa also attended the symposium giving an inspirational speech. Many students had wide range of questions to ask in the end of the talk session. With her positive insight she responded kindly to each one of theme whether it is personal or regarding their future with her great smile claimed to be her “trademark” by Professor Fujisaki.
