Talk show by DJ Ipek Ipekciouglu, Berlin based German female ethnic electronic DJ and musician with roots from Turkey 

"Identity and Diversity about life as a minority"

On May 9, with cooperation by European Institute, German Embassy and Institute for foreign relations, a talk show by DJ Ipek Ipekcioglu was held at Sophia University. More than 180 students participated.

Turkish origin, a second generation immigrant in Germany, Ipek is a world renowned lesbian DJ and music producer. Also with her degree in Social Education, as a LGBT activist she formed an organization to support LGBT Turkish immigrant in Germany as well as participating in many activities to educate about sexual minorities in hope for realizing true diverse society.

Viewing of her works

In her speech she shared her life as a minority and her identity with a sense of a great humor. Born in Muslim family, she spoke highly of her family who accepted her sexuality despite of their religious belief. She also emphasized an importance of freedom in life as well as not falling into isolation. “Although it isn’t easy to lead a life different from majority, I hope you will cherish your own identity to live freely and honestly”. Also she addressed “Please not to fear unknowns instead to think as they are something to enrich our society.” Only unity in diverse cultures can bring true diversity: race, religions, sexuality, she said.

Lunch together with students

After the lecture she had lunch with teachers and students of Faculty of Humanities German Literature. Ipek was invited by German Embassy to participate in “Tokyo Rainbow Parade” and also she attended various educational events while her first visit to Japan.
