A renowned expert on Japan National Security Policies joins Sophia University

Sophia University Welcomes Dr. Michael Green, Former Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and Senior Director for Asian Affairs at National Security Council of the White House as Professor by Special Appointment

On Oct 1, 2017 Dr. Michael Green, former Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and Senior Director for Asian Affairs at National Security Council (NSC) of the White House joined Sophia University as Professor by Special Appointment. He is a renowned expert on International Foreign Policies specializing in Japan National Security Policy with extraordinary services. Residing in Japan long term in the past he is fluent in Japanese language as well. He will contribute to Sophia University in its research exchange activities with Georgetown University in the area of International Politics and also in launching joint projects with CSIS with an aim to cultivate human resources to excel in the field of International Politics enhancing globalization of Sophia University.

Georgetown University where Dr. Green serves as a professor is also a private Jesuit university established in 1789. Internationally known for its excellence of the education in the field of politics and international relations, Georgetown notable alumni include former U.S President Bill Clinton and Professor Emeritus Sadako Ogata among many other highly recognized diplomats and experts in the area of politics.

As for the exchange with Sophia University, it all started as Sophia students had been dispatched to Georgetown University in 1935. Currently various exchanges are being made between two universities upon the comprehensive partnership being concluded as well as the establishment of the application system for special admission to Georgetown University from Sophia University. Dr. Green has also been involved in Sophia’s educational research activities by attending the special symposium for Sophia University 100 years anniversary commemoration as a guest speaker and also giving a joint lecture to Sophia students upon their Washington D.C. Study Tour (March 2017).

Profile of Dr. Michael Green

1983 B.A. from Kenyon College, Ohio
1987 M.A and 1994 Ph.D in International Relations from The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, The Johns Hopkins University, Washington, D.C.

Before joining NSC in the White House in 2001, he served as Professional Lecturer at The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies as well as Acting Director of Edwin O. Reischauer Center at The Johns Hopkins University. From 2016 he serves as Chair in Modern and Contemporary Japanese Politics and Foreign Policy at Georgetown University.
