On July 20, a ceremony was held under the auspicies of Sophia Alumni Association to present a grant from the support fund to encourage extracurricular activity.
The support fund has been given out to current students since last year with an aim to support the extracurricular activities and to recognize their outstanding achievements and contribution to society. This year 14 Humanities-related activities received a total of 2.1 million yen, and 39 sports activities received a total of 5 million yen.
Instead of allotting the support fund uniformly, a grant will go to applicant who meets a certain set of standards. Criteria for winning a grant are based on their performance goal and achievements. The winner will be determined by judges after a careful screening of applications. The committee of judges is chaired by Mr. Norio Izumi, President of Sophia Alumni Association.
At the ceremony, President Izumi encouraged the student by saying: "We want you to strike a good balance between school work and extracurricular activities, and spend a wonderful school life. Next year, Sophia University will be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of its founding. So, those of you, who are in sports activities, why not bring us the honor of winning consequtive championships in Sophia-Nanzan Sports Festival. And those of you, who are in the field of Humanities, make Sophia University a trendsetter of culture for the world."
