June 28, Mr. Mohamed Saleheen, World Food Programme(WFP) Director Japan and Korea Relations, gave a special lecture titled "Global Hunger and the Role of WFP – What you can do" at Sophia University to commemorate the start of a new partnership in education.
Sophia University and WFP signed an agreement on educational collaboration on December 13, 2011, based on their shared concerns for global and humanitarian issues. It is the first such agreements to be signed between WFP and a university in Asia. WFP's commitment to eliminating global hunger and Sophia's motto of "Men and Women for Others, with Others" form the foundation of a partnership in educating concerned and proactive global citizens.
The Sophia-WFP agreement includes the following initiatives in education and cooperation.
1. WFP will serve on the advisory board for Sophia's cross-faculty program on International Cooperation, a program that incorporates the expertise of international organizations in its academic training. The program aims at training a new generation of global leaders ready to tackle global issues with a combination of academic and practical knowledge as well as a sense of justice and compassion.
2. Sophia's General Studies curriculum will include lectures by WFP representatives on "Globalization and International Contribution".
3. To raise awareness in the shortage of food and clean water in many parts of the world, Sophia will introduce a new menu in its cafeteria where 30 yen of each purchase will go to WFP’s "Fill the Cup" and other projects in food aid.
4. During Open Campus on August 2, 3, 4, Sophia will collect donations for WFP. Sophia and WFP hope to convey the message that 21st global leadership goes beyond competition and aims at cooperation and collaboration for a world without hunger, physically and spiritually.
