
Mr. Yoshiteru Uramoto
Mr. Yoshiteru Uramoto, who was inaugurated on October 1, 2012, as Regional Director of ILO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, was invited by Sophia University to teach in the Faculty of Foreign Studies.
Mr. Uramoto holds 32 years of experience as an international civil servant working for UNICEF, UNIDO and other organizations. Not only did he have an incredible experience in education, health and welfare, emergency support program, and peacebuilding activities but he has also served in various developing countries promoting the project for industrial development. His role as a Japanese representative in UN organization has left many contributions to ODA diplomacy. All in all, being a frontline negotiator in a number of talks held at the UN headquarters, Mr. Uramoto has played a vital part in a global theater.
For this academic year, Mr. Uramato taught a course entitled “Conflicts and Security” as a part-time lecturer in our Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies. He has shown a keen interest in education and research activities as well. He is now holding the position of regional director of ILO and actively engaged in establishing a world peace through improving the labor conditions.
The presence of Mr. Uramoto at Sophia University will make a positive contribution to Sophia University Global Education Center -SGE- which is scheduled to open within the Faculty of Foreign Studies. The establishment of this Center is aimed at carrying out the new educational approach “3 languages and 3 perspectives” programs in which the acquisition of high proficiency in foreign languages is combined with the efficiency in communicative skills supported by deep understanding of politics, economics, and cultures of the world.
Needless to say, Sophia University has been selected as Type B Project for Promotion of Global Human Resource Development by MEXT in September 2012. Our endeavor to successfully meet the criteria of this Project is the whole idea.
Mr. Uramoto’s past experience in the international scene, his life in foreign countries, and his rich network of acquaintances will help us realize the objective of fostering young talents who have chosen international civil servants as their occupational career. With his deep involvement in the profession of international civil servants and his current position at ILO, Professor Uramoto’s expertise can definitely meet the needs of the occasion to promote global human resource development at Sophia University.
