Sophia University set up the “Support programs and donations for students afflicted by the Great East Japan Earthquake” asking for your cooperation to institute financial support programs that will enable students who suffered damages from the Great East Japan Earthquake to continue their studies.
To date, we received donations from the parents of our students, faculty, staff members, alumni, companies, and donors, and also from outside Japan, overseas Jesuit Universities of countries such as Korea, US and Germany, their students, faculty, staff members, overseas Jesuit monasteries, amounting to about 120 million yen (Table 1). We thank you most sincerely for your kind understanding and support. Your donations will be spent on support programs to exempt or reduce students’ payment other than tuition and fees and to provide financial aid of living expenses (table 2).
In 2011, a total of 93 students received financial aid including exemption or reduction of tuition and fees, provision of living expenses, amounting to 77million yen. The total of financial aid for academic year 2012 will amount to approximately 90million yen (as of Sept. 28, 2012), including exemption of application fees for admission applicants, entrance fees for 56 new students and tuition fees for 34 current students. We plan to continue with the financial support programs in academic year 2013, and the fund required is estimated to be approximately 240 million yen for the three academic years 2011 to 2013 (Table 2).
We are most grateful for the generous support that enables us to provide the financial aid to students in need and sincerely ask you for continued and new support to help students who may otherwise be forced to abandon their studies.
