Erosion of Human Rights:
The Individual in Crossing National Borders
People cross national borders. Some travel abroad to work, or to study; others migrate to foreign countries with hopes of a better life. These are not the only ways of crossing borders, however. Escape, forced migration, and abduction are also forms of crossing borders. The latter, away from the former, accompanies a negative tone.
The latter differs from the former in that they are often the result of an enactment of massive power that is beyond individuals’ control. Behind the presence of such power, we see the nation placed in a particular circumstance in international relations of the time. It is in this intersection of the individual and the national enactment of power that the questions of human rights arise.
Human rights is a field where the logic of the nation and of the individual collides. How does the nation expel or bring in the individual? How does the “host” society treat forced migrants? How do migrants deal with their own “destiny”? And what has become of their human rights?
This symposium will discuss ways forced migrants are treated and their human rights. With East Asia as the regional focus, we examine instances of forced migration and the question of human rights of the individual crossing borders across China, North Korea, South Korea, and Japan.
