"Imagined History, Fading Memory: Mastering Narrative in Final Fantasy X"

His talk will examine the notion of the 'reality effect' that arises out of historical narratives and how that effect is paradoxically exemplified in the long-form narratives of video games. He will focus his remarks on the 'history' of the fantasy world Spira in Final Fantasy X that unfolds in the course of mastering game play.
・Prof. Dennis Washburn:
Currently he is the Jane and Raphael Bernstein Professor in Asian Studies at Dartmouth College.
His main research interests lie in both modern and classical Japanese literatures and in comparative studies. He also pursued topics in cinema and digital media.
His works: “The Dilemma of the Modern in Japanese Fiction”, “Word and Image in Japanese Cinema”, “Converting Cultures”, and “Translating Mount Fuji: Modern Japanese Fiction and the Ethics of Identity”.
