Yukie Sato, a second year graduate student in the Graduate School of Science and Technology, Laboratory for Environmental Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, has been nominated and certified as one of the recipients of the 2012 Sasakawa Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, in the category of biology-related areas.
This fund award is one of the undertakings run by the Japan Science Society and aimed at fostering ambitious young researchers who have the potential of contributing to the specific studies in the fields of Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences, excluding Medicine.
The applicants must be under the age of 35 at the graduate student level or higher; as well as those who are actively engaged in teaching and research. The winners are chosen based upon their work that demonstrate originality, innovative ideas, and new approaches to handling their chosen topics.
The 325 successful applicants were chosen from 1,195 applications this year, with 86 in the category of biology-related area. Ms Sato was given the privilege to receive the award notification on behalf of other winners in her category at the ceremony held on April 19 at ANA International Hotel in Tokyo.
Her research topic is: Ecological genetics of social amoebae with plant-like life history:stalk cell differentiation and Altruism
She will receive 720 thousand yen in grant money to assist her work, and she is expected to notify upon completion of her research project in March next year.
