Guidelines for Applicants

1. Requirements

A) Applicants must be enrolled in a university outside of Japan.
B) Applicants must attend the whole program to obtain credits (auditing is not possible).
C) Otherwise, there are no formal requirements. However, applicants need a certain level of English ability in order to follow classes and write the essay required to complete the “Japanese Studies” lecture series.
D) Applicants from Sophia University’s exchange institutions will not be exempted from paying the tuition fee for this program.

4. Contents

A) Japanese Language classes
Students’ language levels will be determined based on the results of a placement test (no placement test
is necessary for beginners)

Intensive Japanese 1 (100 level = beginner)
Intensive Japanese 2 (100 level = intermediate)
Intensive Japanese 3 (200 level = advanced-intermediate)

B) Series of lectures on “Japanese Studies” (200 level Series of lectures in English.)

*****Both parts of the program are compulsory.

5. Teaching staff

Japanese language courses will be taught by Ikuko Watanabe from Dartmouth College (U.S.A.) and two other professors. Lectures on Japanese studies will be taught by professors of Sophia University and special lecturers from outside of Sophia University.

6. Credits and Transcript

On successful completion of both parts of the program, students will receive 4 credits for the Japanese language course and 1 credit for the “Japanese Studies” lecture series. Students will be provided with an official transcript from Sophia University.

7. Evaluation

A, B, C, D ==> pass    F ==> fail

230,000 Yen

9. Housing

10. Other expenses

Meals, transportation fees (10,000 Yen - 20,000 Yen), textbooks.

11. Visa

Applicants requiring a visa should apply at the local Japanese embassy or consulate. The applicants will have to get the updated visa information from their local Japanese Embassies or Consulates by the mid of February at the latest as it takes certain days to have visa issued.

12. Health Insurance:

Students are required to purchase a health insurance before arrival in order to cover medical expenses during their stay in Japan. No insurance is provided for short-term visitors to Japan.

13. How to Apply:

The application process is divided into two parts, the submission of materials by postal mail and online application.

A. Submit the following documents by postal mail to Sophia University’s address given below:

① Two photographs (4 x 3 cm, color)
② An official transcript from the applicant’s home institution (if it is not possible to obtain an official transcript (e.g. in the case of freshmen) a certification of student registration is acceptable.
③ The answer sheet of the applicant’s Japanese placement test (not required for beginners);

Online application will be open in March 2013. Please visit the Sophia Summer Session’s website and fill out the online application form. Payment of tuition is only accepted by credit card.

14. Application Period

March 1 (Fri.) - March 29 (Fri.), 2013
Starting time: March 01 0:00 (JST: Japan Standard Time)
Ending time: March 29 23:59 (JST: Japan Standard Time)

15. Selection process

Applications will be processed in the order of their arrival (after the documents submitted by postal mail and the online application have been received by Sophia University). Participants will be selected in an ongoing evaluation process. The process will be finished when the number of accepted students reaches the maximum of 45.
