Contents:
This is an introductory course for those who have not studied Japanese before.
This course covers various basic grammar and vocabulary with particular emphasis on how to use them in
daily communication in Japanese. Students will have opportunities to familiarise themselves with various
grammatical patterns and strategies for communication through speaking and listening activities. Basic
kanji related to each chapter in the textbook will be covered. The course also introduces students to
social and cultural issues in relation to the Japanese language
Method:
After brief explanations of the grammar points by the instructor, students will practise new expressions
through a variety of communicative activities. Students will be given homework to consolidate their
understanding of the materials covered in each class.
Mode:
Students will be expected to actively participate in various class activities such as pair/group work where
they use Japanese with other members of the class as well as the instructor. The instructor may
occasionally use English to explain grammar.
Goals:
By the end of this course, students will develop their ability to communicate orally using simple sentences
and to read and write short passages. After this course, students are encouraged to take Japanese Basic
1B at Sophia Community College.

Contents:
This course (Japanese Basic 2) aims at enabling the students to complete the elementary-level study of
Japanese.
Students are expected to practice Japanese in real-life situations. This course is designed for students
who wish to develop basic language skills to cultivate overall Japanese-language ability.
We will focus on speaking and listening activities with other students in the class (e.g. pair or group work,
role plays etc.) with the aims of improving communication skills in real life situations.
Students who take this course are expected to read hiragana and katakana and also understand some

This course is designed for students who have completed their elementary level Japanese course, who
wish to advance their skills to an intermediate level. The main aim is consolidating knowledge of the
Japanese language obtained in elementary level classes, especially improving communication skills useful
for everyday living. Special attention is paid to giving students the ability to express themselves more
fully, as well. Students will also have the opportunity to learn reading skills through short passages
